Every planned or suddenly arranged trip is especially precious at the moment and may eventually lead to an unexpected findings. The photographic project IncidentalArchStory shifts the perspective beyond Shanghai, trying to record the contemporary built environment in a wider range.

Before each project's official shooting begins, recent on-site construction photos always help me clarify my shooting strategy and estimate the timeline. Looking at the photos of the Tian Tian Coffee drying yard, the project site is at a high altitude, directly capturing the earliest sunlight, making it crucial to capture the most comfortable sunlight during this period.

So, early the next morning, we set off from Lushui City, north of the drying yard's location, driving through forests and valleys. The distant horizon gradually turned yellow, slowly illuminating the landscape. Reaching the foot of the mountain, we climbed the winding mountain road, one bend after another. The eastern mountains were shrouded in an indigo veil, as if sunrise would arrive at any moment.

After driving through the last short stretch of gravel road, we finally arrived. The drying yard's iconic umbrella-shaped structures peeked out from behind the earthen slope, as if waving to us.

The drying ground is tucked away at the end of a side road winding through the mountains, nestled against the eastern slope of the Gaoligong Mountains. To the east, it overlooks the valley towns along the Nu River and the Hengduan Mountains stretching parallel to it. With an almost unobstructed 270-degree eastward angle, the view is incredibly expansive. Standing under the roof, I could hear the chirping of birds, as if they were having an early morning meeting. After a brief moment of peace, I plunged into the busy work of photographing.

The drying ground consists of several staggered, umbrella-shaped trellises, simple in form yet possessing a rich north-south longitudinal visual relationship. Unfortunately, the flat ground in the east-west direction is relatively shallow, making it difficult to capture a properly proportioned frontal view from a human perspective. I had to rely on aerial photography to simulate a comfortable frontal shot.

The weather on the day of the shoot was perfect. Both the sidelight in the morning and the overhead light at midday greatly enhanced the expression of the materials and structural forms. With such favorable weather, all other minor incidents seemed insignificant.
